Xbox Live Arcade Game Round Up (18/08/2010)

The Tomb Raider returns - with a difference

Xbox Live Arcade Game Round Up 18082010
18th August, 2010 By Ian Morris

For the last game in the Summer of Arcade promotion, Microsoft brings us Lara Croft - but this time, not as the traditional Tomb Raider we have come to know. For the first time in the history of the Tomb Raider series, Lara's been plucked out of her comfort zone, and plonked into a co-op adventure, with Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light.

The previous games in the Summer of Arcade promotion included Limbo, a black and white puzzler following a little boy trapped looking for his sister, Hydro Thunder Hurricane, a boat-racing, duck-breaking racing game, old school action/adventuring fun with Castlevania: Harmony Of Despair, and last week, futuristic game show shooter, Monday Night Combat. Because it's a special promotion, Microsoft seem to feel the need to charge 1200 Microsoft Points (about £10) for everything. Don't get us wrong, we don't mind paying more for games that are worth it - but we're still on the fence about this latest lot.

Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light

Price: 1200 Microsoft Points (about £10.00)

With a much heavier emphasis on co-op (both online and locally), players join Lara Croft and the 2000 year old Mayan warrior, Totec, in their quest to stop the evil spirit Xoloti and retrieve an item called the Mirror Of Smoke. Each of the characters will have their own unique weapons, moves and abilities - Lara has her traditional infinite ammo pistols and grappling hook, whilst Totec has somewhat less high-tech spears. The two characters must co-operate, and use their unique abilities to help each other progress through the levels.

We wonder if Totec gets asked for ID - he certainly doesn't look 2000...

Don't worry if you don't have a friend to play it through with though, as Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light also offers a single player campaign, which follows a different story to the multiplayer, where Lara is on her own, with no Totec to help her.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is available to download now from the Xbox Live Arcade as part of the Summer of Arcade promotion for 1200 points.
