Parent's Guide

Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is a match three game based on the film of the same name. With a variety of modes and objectives, and a decent level of challenge, this is a simple puzzle game that kids can really sink their teeth into.

While most stages simply ask you to slide and swap coloured tiles in order to score a certain number of points within a set time limit, there's a number of different modes on offer. Some limit you by number of moves rather than time, forcing you to think extra carefully about which tiles you move, as you attempt to match as many tiles as possible each turn, and set off chain reactions. Others ask you match a number of tiles that contain items - and with only a few item tiles on screen at any time, that can be something of a challenge.

The only thing that may give parents caution when buying the game for younger children is the difficulty. While most of the game's fully voiced, the tutorials aren't, so your child will need to be able to read, or will need you to show them how to play if they've never played a match three game before. Sample sentences include "Tap on the tile and drag it so all three tiles match!" and "Good job! Let's try that with four-in-a-row! You can earn power-ups for matching four- and five-in-a-row!" However, the fact that levels are locked until you complete the previous stage means that kids will need to keep trying until they overcome the obstacle, rather than trying another stage and coming back to it. With some stages requiring a fair amount of logic (especially when it comes to trying to slide the few item tiles towards each other, without accidentally setting off a cascade of combos that buries them at the bottom of the screen), this may be a bit too complex for the very young.

Still, for those who know their match three games, this can provide a good challenge for young kids.
