What is the Wipeout Omega Collection?

Zipping through tight tunnels, leaping across chasms, and careering around hair raising loops, the Wipeout Omega Collection is a compilation of three older Wipeout games, now brought up to (high) speed on the PS4. Bundling Wipeout 2048, which originally launched on the Playstation Vita, with Wipeout HD and its expansion pack, Wipeout Fury (which in turn are updated versions of two Playstation Portable games, Wipeout Pure and Wipeout Pulse), this collection bundles 26 tracks and 48 anti-gravity ships for you to choose from, as you jostle your way through the spectacular vistas in a race for first place.

How do you play the Wipeout Omega Collection?

A fast paced, white knuckle racer, the Wipeout Omega Collection is a game of reactions. With narrow courses, high speeds, and some solid barriers to come a cropper on should you take a corner too wide, you'll need to work hard as you throw your anti-gravity racer round the course. Shortcuts, boost pads and weapon pick ups add an extra dimension to the proceedings, giving you chance to nip past the rest of the pack - or simply blow them up.

Along with the tracks and vehicles from each of the three games, the Wipeout Omega Collection also bundles their respective career modes too. Offering literally hundreds of events to try your hand at, each career mode is a substantial, and often challenging series of events to take on, offering countless hours of play. Outside of the career mode, the game supports both two player split-screen, and up to eight players online, although sadly there's no support for split-screen online play.

How easy is the Wipeout Omega Collection to pick up and play?

In terms of accessibility, the Wipeout Omega Collection is aimed at experienced players, and fans of the earlier Wipeout games. With nothing in the way of a tutorial, this is a game you'll need to pick up on your own - and while that's not too tricky to do, you'll want to keep an eye out for the tips and tricks mentioned on the loading screens, as they'll let you in on the secrets you'll need to win.

The difficulty does vary a lot from game to game, too, with Wipeout 2048 providing a pretty solid challenge (at least partially thanks to the fact it doesn't have an adjustable difficulty level), while Wipeout HD and Fury are, for the most part, a lot easier. With a choice of three difficulty levels on offer in Wipeout HD and Fury, the adaptable difficulty is actually particularly well done here, as not only does it adjust the skill of any computer controlled opponents, but it also lowers the targets you'll need to achieve - a time trial event on Novice difficulty will have a much lower target time than if you were playing on Veteran. There's also a "pilot assist" mode here, which aims to automatically stop you crashing into walls, although it can have mixed results in practice.

For the youngest of players, while there's very little in the way of writing here, a decent reading ability would certainly be a help when it comes to picking up the hints and tips from the loading screen, which are delivered through text only.
